Sport has always been more than entertainment to me. It’s about the stories, the people and the moments that define careers, clubs and communities. My ambition is to tell those stories with accuracy, integrity and insight across every platform.
I’m James McLean, a sports journalist and multimedia broadcaster currently studying Sports Journalism at Southampton Solent University. Alongside my studies, I have built a growing portfolio of published work for respected outlets including GiveMeSport, VAVEL and The Non League Paper, covering breaking news, match reports, feature writing, interviews, live events and in depth analysis.
While football remains at the heart of my work, I also have a passion for boxing, Formula One and cricket. Whether reporting from the touchline, analysing a major event or producing long form features, I strive to deliver journalism that is accurate, balanced and engaging.
My ambition extends beyond writing alone. I aim to build a career as a writer, presenter and commentator, developing the versatility to tell sporting stories in print, on screen and behind the microphone. The careers of John Motson, Larry Merchant and Murray Walker have long inspired me, and my ultimate goal is to earn a reputation that reflects the qualities each embodied: Motson’s storytelling, Merchant’s incisive analysis and Walker’s passion and unmistakable voice. If, over the course of my career, I earned comparisons to John Motson, Larry Merchant and Murray Walker for my storytelling, analysis and passion, I’d consider it the greatest compliment imaginable.
This website showcases my published work, broadcast pieces and multimedia projects as I continue to develop my career in sports media. Every article, report, interview and broadcast represents another step towards becoming a trusted voice in sports journalism, someone who informs, entertains and brings audiences closer to the sports they love.
Current Goal
My current goal is to graduate from Southampton Solent University in the summer of 2027 before spending at least a year in Australia, gaining valuable experience within its world class sporting industry. I hope to continue developing as a writer, presenter and commentator while working with a renowned sports organisation, ideally alongside an A League football club and within Australian cricket through the BBL, WBBL and Sheffield Shield.
