Sholing surrendered a two-goal lead in dramatic fashion as Chertsey Town struck three times late on to claim a remarkable victory.
Eight minutes in, Sholing looked certain to be about to take the lead. Jahiem Dotse was put one-on-one with Luke Wynne-Roberts by Tommy Willard but put it millimetres past the post.
Just over five minutes later, the Chertsey bench, and their fans behind them, exploded with calls for a penalty when Isaac Olorunfemi went to ground after appearing to have been tripped just inside the 18-yard box. The referee was quick to wave them off.
After a Sholing corner from Wynne-Roberts’ left side couldn’t find a home, it came out to Joe Rabbets, who hooked it back in, and found Harry Taylor, who, like the Chertsey defence, was expecting an offside flag, took a few seconds to get his shot off, but it wasn’t enough time for the Curfews to do anything about it, and the deadlock was broken.
It quickly went to two-nil when Tommy Willard picked up a loose ball and found his way past several defenders before burying into the left corner of the Chertsey keeper. Even Willard himself was surprised as he put his hands on his head by the corner flag. The Chertsey players would’ve also been in a state of shock with that being the half-time score.
Turner was only beaten 50 minutes in, by a brilliant right-footed curled effort from Daniel Berry from around 20 yards out that got his side back in the game by nestling into the corner.
The equaliser also came from out of nowhere. Well inside the box, Ashley Lodge let the ball drop and, on the half-volley, found the gap to Turner’s right.
On the 88th minute, the tables had been turned. After his first attempt was denied by Turner, Bradley Wilson got it back and tucked home into Turner’s left side.
It soon got worse for Sholing when Chertsey got their fourth. In all fairness, Turner did the best he could with Nathan Minhas’ shot, but it bounced back off him into the net.
For the second home game running, late woes had cost the Boatmen, and the wait for a first win at the Mortgage Decisions Stadium this season goes on. At the same time, Chertsey’s resilience must be commended.
